Mount Hanover 5k

Duleek and District Athletic Club

Home Turf

The Mount Hanover 5k last Sunday proved to be a momentous day for Duleek and District Club. The race, which was run under Athletics Ireland permit and supported by Duleek and District proved to be a great success. In excess of 330 athletes registered for the event which was held to raise funds for a multi purpose room and development of a safe parking area in the school. Despite the inclement weather conditions it proved to be a great race with lots of fast times.

The overall winner of the race was Simon Ryan from Raheny who made light of the blustery conditions to breeze home in an impressive time of 16.45. Simon was followed closely by Ciaran O’Dwyer from Dunshauglin AC in a time of 17.25 with Shane Boyle just behind him in 17.28. The first lady home was Mary Hanley in a fantastic 19.42 with Shauna Moran coming in just behind her in an equally impressive 20.09. In third place was Catherine Collins in a time of 20.39. The first Duleek athlete home was Peter Hearty who opened his racing season with a smashing performance in a time of 18.21. Just behind him was Fran Power in 19.03 with Derek Reilly showing his versatility, fresh off the back of the National 50km championships by breaking the 20 minute barrier in a time of 19.57.

Despite the great performances from the Duleek males on their home turf it was the clubs female athletes that stole the show. The Duleek team of Lisa Chambard, Lorraine Noone and Sarah McKenna took the team prize with each putting in massive efforts on familiar territory. In addition, the club was well represented by Orla Hillman who smashed her 5k PB, by Shane Reid who ran a great race and also by Anne Hamilton.  It was also a significant day for 20 of the clubs newest members as the clubs Couch to 5k crew completed their first 5k race. This is the first year the club have run the programme and it has been a major success. The athletes have put huge effort into the 6 week programme and their hard training paid dividends as they reached their goal. These effort have complimented the dedication of the coaches and leaders and the finish line was a fitting climax to the programme.

Year to Date

Duleek and District athletic club

Year to Date

2016 has proved to be an eventful and fruitful year to date for Duleek and District Athletic Club. In late January the club attended the Raheny 5 mile road race for the first time. Despite the tough conditions Lisa Chambard got her season off to a flying start with an impressive time of 39.23. There were also great performances from Graham Byrne who romped home in a time of 42.26, Patricia McGlone who finished in 53.21 and Paddy Ryan who completed the course in 39.25.

From there it was on to the Bewleys Trim 10 mile road race. The race, in only its second year has already become a firm favourite in the racing calendar. Despite the testing conditions there were a number of great showings from the Duleek athletes. Amanda Noone opened her 2016 season with an impressive PB of 1 hour 25 mins. There was an equally impressive performance from Orla Hillman who finished in 1 hour 33 mins and Sinead Donnelly who finished in 1 hour 36 mins. Not to be outdone, there were also some great performances from the clubs male athletes with Philip Meehan putting in a strong performance at 1 hour 25 mins and Shane Reid who opened his season in style, arriving home just under the 1 hour 20 mins mark.

With Dublin and Meath out of the way the Duleek bandwagon rolled into Donadea Forest Park in North Kildare for the annual 50k National Championships. The route took the athletes on 10 5k loops of the scenic forest park. Derek Reilly was first home for the club and has carried his excellent 2015 form through to 2016 with a smashing performance of 4 hours 21 mins. This was matched by Anita Fields who marked her first attempt over the distance with an excellent time of 4 hours 51 mins. There were also excellent performances by long distance stalwarts Ray Cassin and John Wall who came home in 4.58 and 5.25 respectively.

From there it was on to Co Louth and Peter Hearty moved swiftly through the gears to finish 7th overall in a mightily impressive time of 17.35 which augurs well for the season ahead. The Run4Enda in Stamullen also saw a strong turnout and showing from the Duleek contingent with Susan Walsh running an impressive 33.12. Leon Saddler was another who made the most of the perfect racing conditions with an excellent time of 35.12 over the 4 mile course.

Stepping Stones

Duleek and District Athletic Club

The juvenile athletes from Duleek and District AC picked up in 2016 where they left off in 2015 with a successful outing to the recent Cushinstown AC Track and Field event. The event, which served as a valuable stepping stone for the upcoming Meath track and field league and championships saw a strong contingent from Duleek make the short trip to the local venue. An excellent event and days athletics was hosted by Cushinstown AC.

There were strong performances from all of the Duleek athletes in both the sprints and field events.  First up was Myles Killeen who put in a great display to win a silver medal in the tot’s race. From there Nessa Rohan and Saoirse Power took gold and silver respectively in a gripping finale to the under 8 60m sprint. Sean Carley put in a great performance in the final of the under 9 60m. Doireann Power took an impressive silver in the Under 10 60m and the club were well represented in this particular race also by Ruby Hartford, Ciara McRoary and Megan O’Connor who were narrowly outside the medals in a very competitive field.  The Under 10 girls carried their excellent from from the track to the long jump pit and Megan O’Connor took silver with an excellent jump of 3 metres 15 which was a personal best. There were also personal bests from Doireann Power and Ruby Hartford.

Aoife Rohan showed great determination to take silver in the under 11 60m sprint and her achievements were matched by Jake Meehan who took silver in the Under 11 Boys 60m. The under 12’s rounded off proceedings from a Duleek and District point of view and Sarah Maxwell, Leah Martin and Chloe Dunnion who participated in not only one but three events with strong performances in the sprints, long jump and shot putt.  A very successful day was had by Duleek and District in all events. This reflects the efforts being put in by all of our juvenile athletes and coaches and bodes well for the upcoming season.

Not to be outdone there were also a number of adults out representing the club. The East of Ireland circuit moved to Staplestown, Co Kildare and there was a welcome return from injury for Sean Cassin in the 10k event. There was also a great performance in this event by Sandra Cassin. From there it was on to the marathon where Derek Reilly and Anita Fields carried through their excellent form from the Dublin marathon with both coming in an impressive 3 hours 45 mins. There were also very steady performances from marathon stalwarts Ray Cassin and John Wall.

The clubs recently launched Couch to 5k programme has proved to be a great success as it now enters week 4. The participants have shown great determination and resolve and are going from strength to strength in preparation for their first 5k event. What seemed like an insurmountable feat a few short weeks ago is now becoming a reality as distance and fitness is slowly being increased week on week. The programme is reaping the rewards of detailed planning by the clubs coaches and leaders and the enthusiasm and drive of the athletes has been infectious. There are a number of upcoming races for the clubs athletes to feast their feet on with the Trim 10 mile, Mount Hanover 5k, Bohermeen half marathon and Duleek National schools 5k just around the corner.

The club are hosting a night with motivational speaker Gerry Duffy on Tuesday 9th February at the Boyne Valley hotel, Drogheda. Door open at 7.30pm and the event commences at 8pm sharp. Waterford Half Marathon

Waterford Half Marathon

Good things come to those who wait and so it proved at the weekend as 10 Duleek and District athletes made the long, but ultimately fruitful trip to Waterford. The Waterford half marathon is a staple diet in any winter training plan. This year’s race carried the additional complication of being rescheduled as storm huffed and puffed and ultimately blew away the original December date.  However, the large crowd who arrived on the day were not deterred by this in what was a very well organised and successful event.  Conditions were ideal and as always, Waterford athletic club were fantastic hosts.

There were also lots of great performances from the Duleek contingent on the day and a stringent training programme which commenced back in October paid dividends on the day. Laura Donohoe put in a great performance in what was her first half marathon. First home for the club on the day was Derek Reilly who is continuing on his excellent vain of form from last year with a large personal best of 1 hour 34 mins. He was followed closely by Kevin Durkin who also ran a large personal best and an equally impressive time of 1 hour 40 mins.  Orla Hillman was another who carried through excellent form from last year also running a personal best and there were also great performances on the day from Susan Corry, Karen O’Sullivan and Deborah O’Sullivan.

Club training has just resumed after the winter break and there are a number of high quality local races for club athletes to prepare for. One notable difference this year is the launch of the clubs Inaugural Couch to 5k programme. The programme is designed to assist any running novices to reach an initial goal of completing a 5k. Members will be assisted every step of the way in this structured plan by a dedicated team of coaches. Further details on the programme can be found at www.Duleekac.ie, on Twitter @Duleekac or on the clubs Facebook page.
